Avoid Oversharing

Do you occasionally vent on social media? Or have you perused the accounts of other people on social media? What are your thoughts on this? Is it okay to vent on social media? Is there any risk involved in venting on social media?

Social media is undoubtedly utilized by its users to vent and express their emotions on a regular basis. Social media posts frequently discuss various experiences that its members are having, whether they are pleased, unhappy, dissatisfied, or even enraged. It makes sense given how active individuals are becoming in expressing themselves online given the rapid growth of technology. According to We Are Social data published in Warta Ekonomi.co.id, there would be 202.6 million internet users in Indonesia by 2021, of which 170 million will utilize social media. Over time, this figure keeps rising. It has been established that this figure rose by 12.35% in January 2022. With 88.7% of all active users, WhatsApp leads all other social media platforms. Instagram and Facebook are close behind with 84.8% and 81.3% of active users, respectively. Additionally, users of Tiktok and Telegram are present, with respective percentages of 63.1% and 63.8%. This information also states that Indonesian internet users are notorious for oversharing.

Oversharing on social media refers to posting something inordinately. Giving out an excessive amount of personal data or information, such as full home addresses, photo IDs, and other personal information, can be construed as oversharing. The practice of overly broadcasting, revealing, or speaking about one's personal life on social media is another example of oversharing.

One might overshare on social media for a number of reasons, including:

1. Wish to be in close contact with others.

2. Experience worry about the environment.

3. Has weak boundaries with others

4. Coming from a family with a history of excessive sharing

5. Try to get other people's approval or attention.

6. Lack of social connections to share stories with

There is nothing wrong with wanting to share tales on social media, however it should be remembered that over posting on these platforms might have certain negative consequences, such as the following:

1. Providing space for cybercrime

Oversharing on social media can lead to cybercrime, including ransomware, phishing, and other forms of malware. Instagram users who recklessly reveal personal information, such as posting posts with photographs of KTP, NIK, phone numbers, and other such details, can be held responsible for this offense.

2. Actual criminal activity

Oversharing can lead to some crimes in the real world as well. One of them was a residence that was broken into by burglars after one of the homeowner's children posted a picture of five airline tickets on his social media, according to the Warta Ekonomi media. The child's excessive sharing suggests to the offender that their home is unoccupied. We should learn from this experience to not readily reveal personal information on social media.

3. What leads to harassment or bullying?

Bullying is frequently brought on by a variety of issues in a person's day-to-day life, prior events, trauma, negative experiences, and other things that are communicated through social media posts. Many people who utilize social media have been attacked by critical remarks from netizens who began with their posts. There are also plenty of instances where arguments started by online taunting or comments about one another spill over into actual conflicts.

The issues listed above demonstrate that social media is not the best platform for disclosing highly personal information. especially when it comes to our personal issues and matters of privacy. But there's no denying that occasionally we also require a venue for storytelling. Being social creatures, it only seems sense that we require the company of other individuals to express our complaints to one another. We naturally require assistance from others in order to find solutions to the issues we encounter.
