Don't Allow Stigma Compromise your Emotional Well-being.
Have you ever felt unique compared to others? Have you ever been concerned that you may be suffering from a mental illness? Have you ever worried that if others learn you are dealing with a mental health problem, they will reject you? Well, buddy, don't be alarmed. because people often suffer from mental illnesses.
It is not shameful to occasionally encounter mental health issues as a social being endowed with reason by God. Because of the modern world's more quick-paced expectations and the widespread use of social media, which frequently displays other people's accomplishments, it is typical for us to feel behind and to eventually develop stress, despair, or other anxiety disorders.A person's mental health illnesses are typically triggered by their social interactions with other people. If that describes you, relax; mental health conditions can be treated. However, stigma from society or even from ourselves, who think that mental health illnesses are embarrassing, might hinder efforts to treat mental health disorders.
A stigma is a judgmental term applied to a certain individual or group by others. (M.Psi. Wirdatul Anisa) People with mental problems frequently postpone or refuse to seek care because of this stigma. One may experience stigma from within or from the outside. Self-stigma is a type of stigma that develops when a person assesses or feels uneasy about himself as a result of having a mental health illness. Public stigma, on the other hand, refers to the unfavorable labels that society typically attaches to those who suffer from mental health conditions. This tagging may take the form of contempt, prejudice, or exclusion.
Stigma towards those who have mental health issues is still pervasive in Indonesia. As noted in the VOA Indonesia media, the Indonesian people are becoming more aware of the value of mental health, but regrettably this has been accompanied by a rise in societal stigma against those who suffer from mental health disorders, which only serves to exacerbate cases of mental health disorders themselves. People with mental disorders may feel ashamed and are hesitant to seek more therapy because of this stigma. The stigma associated with this mental health problem needs to be removed even if this treatment is crucial for their recovery.
The appropriate response can vary depending on whether it is self-stigma or public stigma. Increasing mental health literacy, asking for help from friends and family, and seeking out peer support can all help people overcome self-stigma. Meanwhile, there is a need for education, increased literacy, forming social bonds, and systemic activism connected to mental health in the community to combat public stigma.
The actions listed below can be an alternative to take when you believe you are experiencing a mental health condition rather than judging yourself with numerous stigmas.
1. Self-contemplation
Try to consider the trigger factor if something bothers you. After that, look for a solution. Don't be too quick to criticize yourself if it hasn't been resolved; instead, accept it as a fresh life lesson. Maybe this will help you grow more. Additionally, if necessary, look for friends that can relate to your situation. Tell me about the issue you're having and don't hesitate to seek advice or assistance from others you know and trust.
2. Keep a Journal
Writing in a journal allows us to examine our feelings and thoughts around the current situation. If we continuously journal, it can be a helpful tool for self-exploration and help us finally realize who we are. Understanding ourselves will help us prevent self-stigmatism since we won't be as quick to criticize ourselves when we have mental health illnesses.
3. Looking for Peer Support
Asking for assistance does not automatically imply weakness. Humans should require others to help them solve difficulties since they are social beings. Similar to how we might use talking to a friend or enrolling in counseling with the psychiatric community as an alternative to soothing the mind while dealing with mental health conditions.
