Don't Underestimate the Effects of Burnout! Understand the Impact and How to Deal with It

Have you ever been so tired that you lost energy and lost interest in social interaction? Or have you ever noticed that you suddenly become irritable, stressed, or resentful of your current job, resulting in a gradual decrease in your performance? Be cautious, you may be suffering from burnout!

Recently, the term "burnout" has become popular, particularly to describe the condition of someone who is exhausted from routine work. Freudenberger coined the term "burnout" in 1974 to describe fatigue caused by excessive work demands. Until the term "burnout" entered medical jargon.

Burnout syndrome (BOS) or burnout has also been officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an occupational phenomenon that is solely related to work-related stress and not stress from other aspects of life. It is not surprising that people who suffer from burnout are usually those who have a heavy workload, are used to pushing themselves to finish work even when they are tired, are never appreciated for their work, or have monotonous work. At first glance, burnout appears to be a common problem at work, but if ignored and allowed to persist, burnout can have a negative impact on those who are experiencing it. The following are some of the negative consequences that someone experiencing burnout will face if it is not addressed immediately:

1. Lowered body immunity

2. Anxiety problems

3. A persistent feeling of exhaustion

4. Sleep issues

5. Suicidal ideation

How serious is the impact of burnout, my friend? But don't worry; burnout, like other mental health disorders, can be overcome. Here are some suggestions to help you overcome burnout:

1) Develop a priority scale.

Create a priority list for all of your activities and projects. Sort the list from most important to least important to unimportant. This method can assist you in determining which tasks should be prioritized and which can be postponed first in order to avoid wasting time on unimportant tasks.

2) Speak with the boss.

When your boss assigns you work that exceeds your capacity, you must be able to communicate this to your boss. If you are feeling overwhelmed by your work, express yourself, and don't be afraid to seek assistance from others. In addition to your boss, you communicate with the human resources department (HRD) about this matter. They may find appropriate alternative solutions, such as moving you to another team.

3) Be more realistic and self-critical.

Excessive expectations can also be one of the triggers that cause us to feel depressed. You can reduce your anxiety and stress at work by changing your mindset and being realistic. Also, don't forget to express gratitude to yourself for your accomplishments.

4) Modify your way of life.

A healthy lifestyle can also aid in the prevention of burnout. Our chaotic thoughts and busy daily lives frequently cause us to lose sight of ourselves. You can begin to implement a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, limiting your intake of fast food, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. These things can help maintain a healthy body and an easier-to-focus mind, lowering the risk of burnout. Aside from that, you can try to find a new hobby or do something new that has never been done before to help you overcome burnout.

5) Tell someone you can rely on.

Try to express your feelings to the people you can trust the most. Even if you don't always get a solution, this method can aid in the release of negative emotions and the reduction of workplace stress.
