PSSI Scandal: Why is Indonesian football being wrecked by corruption and manipulation?
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Indonesia's national football governing organization, has been the target of a slew of controversies known as the PSSI scandal. These scandals involved a variety of charges, such as corruption, match-results manipulation, and ethical transgressions.
Match-fixing controversy was the first scandal
When the Indonesian Anti-Money Laundering Agency (PPATK) discovered suspicious activity in the accounts of numerous PSSI members in 2013, the first PSSI controversy was made public. A number of Indonesia Super League (LSI) games were found to have been rigged after the additional examination.
As a result, on March 20, 2013, FIFA made the decision to halt all football-related operations in Indonesia, including club and national team appearances in international competitions. FIFA also gave PSSI a deadline to change its ways and restart Indonesian football.
Second Scandal: PSSI was frozen
The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) announced the suspension of PSSI on April 17, 2015, in reaction to PSSI's failure to address issues with match manipulation and corruption. The PSSI Normalization Committee (KNPSSI) was subsequently established by Kemenpora to address issues inside PSSI and bring Indonesian football back to the international stage.
Chairman of KNPSSI Resigns Amid Third Scandal
When Agum Gumelar, the chairman of KNPSSI, resigned from his position in 2016, the scandal once more hit PSSI. Agum Gumelar asserts that he is resigning because he no longer believes he has enough power to implement the essential changes at PSSI.
Fourth Scandal: Ethics Violation
In 2017, Edy Rahmayadi, the leader of PSSI at the time, was accused of having broken the law by making remarks that some people perceived as racist. Thereafter, Edy Rahmayadi submitted his letter of resignation.
Fixing Efforts
FIFA released a statement in 2020 applauding PSSI's improvements to itself. According to FIFA, PSSI has significantly improved its management and direction of Indonesian football.
The PSSI Integrity Commission was created in 2020 as part of efforts to address issues within PSSI and was founded by PSSI in the same year. This commission is in charge of monitoring and confirming PSSI's adherence to standards of ethics and integrity in the administration of football.
The public still has little faith in PSSI despite these attempts. Even some observers claimed that more needed to be done to clean up corruption and manipulation in Indonesian football and that the issues at PSSI had not yet been fully fixed.
The Clean Football Program will be introduced in 2021 as one of PSSI's initiatives to enhance the reputation of Indonesian football. This initiative tries to teach football players, coaches, and officials the importance of fair play and integrity.
In addition, PSSI is dedicated to severely punishing any ethics and integrity transgressions that take place there. Clubs, players, and officials who have been found to have participated in match-fixing and corruption have received harsh sanctions from PSSI.
Nonetheless, many people continue to question PSSI's efforts. Several observers even believed that PSSI's efforts to combat corruption and manipulation were merely "playing about" and not seriously taken.
Indonesian football and PSSI are still the subjects of controversy. To clean up corruption and manipulation in Indonesian football, many parties are advocating for more radical measures and prompt action. Although it would be difficult, attempts to clean up Indonesian football of fraud and manipulation must continue.
